1.Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.

3.In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

4.Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture in three additions, alternating with the milk. Mix until well combined.

5.Divide the batter evenly among several bowls (the number of bowls will depend on how many colors you want in your cake). Add a different food coloring to each bowl and stir until the color is evenly distributed.

6.Pour the colored batter into the prepared cake pans, spreading it evenly. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

7.Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

8.Once the cakes are cool, use a sharp knife to level off the tops of the cakes if they are not completely flat.

9.To assemble the cake, place one layer on a cake stand or serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting over the top, then top with another cake layer. Repeat with the remaining layers.

10.Frost the outside of the cake with the remaining frosting.
